Top Tips

Promoting your tribute fund scheme on social media can often seem like a bit of a daunting prospect, but with a little sensitivity, it is possible. Read on to find out more.

A lot of people shy away from promoting in-memory giving and tribute funds, as they worry about causing offence and upsetting their followers, particularly on social media, where responses can be very visible. However, it's possible to create sensitive posts, and increasingly, your followers understand the need for fundraising, including from in-memory gifts.

As long as you don’t solely focus on tribute fund promotion, and it’s part of your marketing mix then you should be able to engage your supporters gently and bring on board more in-memory supporters. It's not a quick win, supporters may see a post on Facebook and then months later be interested in a fund, but planting the seeds of the idea is the crucial part.

Getting started:

  • Always include a photo, even if you do have to use a dreaded stock image. Posts with photos are far more likely to be seen in your followers’ news feeds
  • Link back to your tribute fund page on your website where relevant
  • Use hashtags on Twitter and Instagram - but not on Facebook. They have become increasingly obsolete on Facebook and look out of place
  • Find out the best times to post. There are lots of free tools that will help you work this out, for example, Hootsuite. If you haven’t got any previous data to review then think about when your supporters are likely to be free and on social media, maybe first thing in the morning before work, lunchtime, and two screening while they relax in the evening
  • Get the right image size. You can use the same image ratio for Facebook and Twitter, (currently 1600 x 900 pixels works but do keep an eye on any changes), Instagram, however, needs a square image.

Our top five social media tips:

The five key principles for promoting tributes funds also hold true to social media, so we've put together a few example posts to show you how you can follow these principles.

1. Focus on your supporters

A tribute page is a way for bereaved families to remember someone they've lost. Focussing on this aspect of our service puts your supporter care at the heart of your marketing.

2. Talk about outcomes

As with all fundraising communications, supporters like to know how their donations have made a difference. Try and show the impact of tribute fund donations on your beneficiaries, and demonstrate your need for support.

3. Real-life examples

If you can get permission from your supporters to share their story on social media, this is a great tool to not only engage your followers (people connect with people) but also highlight the impact of a tribute fund, both for the family and for your charity.

4. Events and activities

Sharing the events and activities that fundraisers take on in memory of a loved one is a great way to promote your tribute fund gently, while supporting your fundraisers and making them feel valued. It also lets others know they can fundraise for a fund, and makes for an engaging post. It's a winner all round.

5. Milestones and memories

Sharing how our pages can mark special occasions and milestones, with virtual candles, cards and gifts is an engaging way to connect with supporters and can vary to include seasonal content. It helps promote your tribute funds, but again the focus is on your supporters.
